A driver has died in Yorkshire when his car crashed through a fence on to a rail track and was hit by a train travelling at about 100mph.

None of the 75 passengers on the 1425 Virgin train from Plymouth to Edinburgh was hurt in Monday's collision at the village of Copmanthorpe, near York.

Name a bridge

Well, if you've ever wanted to name a bridge, here's your chance: Swale Bridge competition.

As part of the A249 Iwade Bypass to Queenborough Improvement project, the (artist's impression of the) bridge looks pretty impressive.

The crossing will consist of two abutments, 18 pier bases (13 will be on land and 5 will be within the Swale Estuary), 36 supporting columns and 1.25 kilometres of bridge deck. The new crossing, which will provide un-interrupted access to the island, will carry four lanes of traffic, two in each direction and will provide clearance of 29 metres above high water level.

Lowering Petrol Prices

I can't help but feel the press were being a bit stupid, running the stories last week about the fact that there is no fuel shortage.

That sort of thing just gets into peoples heads, and of course they go out and queue to fill their car, making it a self fulfilling story - anyway - finally a bit of good news: petrol prices are coming down a few pence. Shell dropping prices, and an article about the general price fall.

A litre of unleaded on Asda's 158 forecourts dropped to 89.9p, while diesel fell to a maximum price of 92.9p per litre.

M25 closed for 24 hrs

Crikey - a fire in a van carrying acetylene gas between junctions 23 and 21a caused the M25 in Hertfordshire to be closed on Tuesday and not expected to reopen until late on Wednesday.

The rail link between St Albans and Watford was also closed.

Increase in congestion charge

As of Monday the congestion charge has hit £8 per day - frightening. Commuting in every work day for the year (5*52) will now cost you £2080 out of your already taxed earnings!

According to the cclondon site the rise is in order to:

maintain and build upon the benefits of the congestion charging scheme
support new investment on measures to further reduce traffic congestion
support new investment on the wider objectives of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy

There is of course the fleet scheme bring the cost down to £7 per day - and the offer of three charge free days for a monthly payment and 40 charge free days for an annual payment of the congestion charge.
